Stedman’s description of the novel alone would have drawn me toward this story: ‘ Himself is a sort of Under Milk Wood meets The Third Policeman meets Agatha Christie’. Louis de Bernieres calls this novel ‘a magic realist murder mystery set in rural Ireland, in which the dead play as important a part as the living’. Its blurb describes it as a ‘beautiful and darkly comic debut novel creates an unforgettable world of mystery, bloody violence and buried secrets.’ ![]() ![]() I selected Himself to begin with as, although all of her storylines appealed to me, I was really in the mood for the Gothic feel which this seemed to promise. I have been intrigued by the highly praised work of Jess Kidd for quite a long time, and decided to purchase one of her books to read. ![]()
